Peak District Birthday Bash, 2026 (Full): Race Report

Image
2022 marked the 70th anniversary of the forming of the UK's first national park and in celebration, Peak Running marked the occasion with a 70 km event, taking in the very best of the central section of the Peak District, starting and finishing in the beautiful village of Castleton.   With the option for walkers and non-competitive runners to start early, plus the option for a 35 km route, effectively covering the first half of the course, the event proved to be a big success and as such, has become an annual event with this, the fifth year or 75th Anniversary event, held again by Peak Running with the major support of CraggRunner. I previously ran the event in 2024 and although I didn't keep very good notes at the time, I definitely remember enjoying the first half significantly more than the second half, with the final few fields feeling like a particular slog. I also remember being a little cautious about a dodgy foot that had been injuring me around that time and as such, ...

Chesapeake versus the Mountain - The Crooked Tracks Sagarmatha 24-hour challenge

Image
Crooked Tracks Wiltshire - Sagarmatha, where Jamie Bell, Daz Knight, Will Whitell and Ade McCordick repeatedly climb and descend the same hill 92 times in order to run 100km whilst exceeding the height of Sagarmatha, aka Mount Everest*.     * In under 24-hours     * On the hottest day of the year (so far)     * With no specific hill training ('it'll be more of a challenge with no training...') Stage 1 - 'Should soon smash that out b done in about 16hrs i recon' 11th January 2022 and a new Whatsapp chat group appears on my phone simply called ' Stupid idea ', shortly followed by a message from fellow running club member Jamie: ' Ade u wanna join me, will n daz on this '.   I take a look at the details.  It looks a very long way to drive to climb a stupid hill and we're not exactly short of hills in Derby.  ' Looks stupid ', I say. ' I'm in '. What follows is months of discussion including how the advertised hill steepness (33%)...

The Fractured Marathon 2021

Image
The Fractured Marathon, Calke Abbey, 30th November 2021. The Fractured Marathon, organised by Peak-Running, consists of 10 timed laps around Calke Abbey, Ticknell, Derbyshire.  For this event, each lap is 2.6 miles (4.2km) in length with each lap starting on the half-hour between 5pm and 10pm and competitors can only start the next lap if they are back within 30-minutes.  Therefore, runners have to complete all ten laps to achieve the full marathon distance. There is the option to either run the course as part of a team with each member running between 2 and 5 laps, or else to do the whole lot solo.  I opted for the solo run. I was drawn to this event due to the opportunity to do some night racing, with sunset towards the end of the second lap.  There also seemed to be a degree of strategy to the whole event i.e. do you race round in 24-25 minutes and allow yourself 5-6 minutes of rest each lap, or do you take your time and have a relaxed 28-29 minute lap with only a...

Introduction

Hello, I'm Ade. I took up running as an adult in March 2017 to try Parkrun and having sort of enjoyed it, have been out on the roads and trails most weeks since.  After looking for some variety and some inspiration, I joined Chesapeake Road Runners in early 2020.  This blog is just a collection of notes taken of some of the more notable events covered since then.
